UX Bites #8 — Monzo, Stripe & more...

The most popular UX Bites from the last 2 weeks.

Hey 👻,

It’s Halloween. The pumpkins that my children painted two weeks ago, are already looking droopy on my doorstep. It’s my job to clean it up, apparently.

But the show must go on. Here are 5 of the most popular UX Bites from the last few weeks.

(Plus a new feature at the end).

1. If we say we’re not talking to you, hang up

If someone calls you claiming to be from Monzo, you can now check to see if they’re telling the truth or not in the app.

2. Reminder before Duolingo’s trial ends

If you go to cancel your Duolingo subscription, you'll see this. It’s smart, because it reassures the user that they'll be reminded 2 days before the trial ends.

i.e., reduces the “oh, what about if I forget, I should just cancel now to be sure” worry.

3. Did you leave anything in the car?

After riding in a Bolt, you'll be asked to rate your driver, and be given a clear prompt to contact them if you’ve left anything in the car.

4. Superhuman

Superhuman warns you if you’ve mentioned that there’s an attachment to an email, but nothing is attached.

Apple Mail and Gmail do this too. Still, a great little bit of UX.

5. Reminding the user about coupons

Stripe will save previously entered coupon codes (that you've removed), so you can add them back in with a single click.

👻 And because it’s halloween, here are a few easter eggs 👻

(Would they even be called Easter eggs? Halloween eggs? Pumpkin Picks?)

6. Monzo’s “pull to get paid” interaction

When opting to receive your salary a day early with Monzo, you usually see an animation to drag a dollar down into a wallet.

For Halloween, they were made into a sweet and a pumpkin.

7. Revolut’s login screen

During festive periods, Revolut will show special login icons.

8. Searching halloween on Google

When searching for 'Halloween' on Google, you'll see a bunch of (not so) spooky creatures floating across the screen.

Was 5 (I don’t count those 3 Halloween eggs*) not enough? There are hundreds published right now, with more added daily.

Coming soon: submitting Bites 👀

In the next few weeks, I’ll be rolling out a “proper” Bite submission process, which finally includes crediting the hunter.

This could be you…

If a post is approved, you’ll get your name, with a link, attributed to that UX Bite for all of time.

This could be a nickname, your real name, and a link to your design portfolio, social media account, or online CV. It’s all optional (you could also stay anonymous).

But, each Bite can only be posted once—it’s a gold rush.

So this is a head start for all of my subscribers. If you know of (or have built) an awesome bit of UX, email me.

It doesn’t need to be a famous product, and it could have zero users. It’s more about showcasing what great UX looks like (and why).

The form will be up very soon, but for now, include:

  • Information about the Bite (how you found it, device, URL etc)

  • An image of the Bite (I won’t publish any personal info)

  • Your name and desired URL (if you want to be a hunter)

Happy hunting.

As always, it helps with deliverability if you reply (it’s like telling your inbox that you like me, or something). I reply to every one. ✌️
