UX Bites #9 — Duolingo, Snapchat & more...

🍪 The most popular UX Bites from the last 2 weeks.

Hey 👋,

My Christmas tree is up (not my idea), I have a hot water bottle most days, and my garden office was 8’ this morning.

But I’ve defrosted my fingertips just enough to compile the 8 most popular UX Bites of the last few weeks.

Here they are:

1. Double or nothing

Duolingo have a "double or nothing" mechanism, which is likely to really motivate users for a specific time period.

This is particularly useful early on, to avoid the “day 3 churn”.

Duolingo — Gamification

2. Snapchat’s social proof

When signing up to Snapchat, you're shown how many of your phone contacts have been active within the last month.

i.e., “yes, people still use Snapchat”.

Snapchat — Social Proof

3. Dynamic sunlight location

When browsing an apartment, you can see the position of the sun at different times throughout the day.

MR Group — Hunted by Victor

4. Approximate view from your seat

For some events, StubHub will show an approximate view (by 'zone') of your selected seats.

StubHub — Hunted by Emily

5. Apple’s band size

When configuring an Apple Watch online, if you select a strap size without first opening the fitting guide, you'll see this prompt.

Apple — Input quality

6. How Strava maintains your privacy

You can hide the start and end parts of your route (e.g., your house), when you share your workout.

Strava — Habits

7. Tesla’s storm watch

If a storm is forecast in your area, Tesla will remind you that powerwall is still able to provide back-up power.

This is fantastic, because it's highlighting an often silent benefit.

i.e., you might never actually need the "back-up power" feature, but this reminds you that you're protected.

Tesla Powerwall — Visible Lifeboats

8. Fishing inside Google

If you make a search without any results on Google, you'll see an animation of this monster fishing.

If you click on them, they'll catch an assortment of items (tin cans, boots, etc).

Google — User Delight

Craving more? There are literally hundreds, with extra context, UX psychology, filters and more.

Only 3 days left to get 25% off for life

It’s awesome to watch how product teams are using the new UX Bites filters, to make the most of the expanding BFM+ library.

BFM+ has only been out for a week, but I’ve had a bunch of you reach out to tell me how you’re using it productively:

  • Running group ‘hackathon’ sessions—literally getting it up on a big screen and browsing through the feed like a group session of TikTok.

  • Design agencies getting quick ideas—filtering by industry to find the best moments of UX for a project. It’s like a ‘UX inspiration’ cheatcode to show clients.

  • Binge-watching to get quick exposure to random UX ideas—so many of you have said that once you get started, it’s a super addictive way of just scrolling through cool UX.

Interested in Built for Mars Premium? Get the early bird discount (25% off for life) with coupon code ‘earlyspacebird’. ⚡️

Expires on December 1st (in 3 days). 🚨

💡 There’s a 7-day refund policy and I offer discounts for students and educators (just email me).

For those of you who aren’t interested in BFM+, don’t worry; I won’t have a promo like this in every email.

This is actually the only deal I think I’m ever going to run (i.e., no Black Friday / Boxing Day sales). You won’t have to keep hearing about random discounts.

If anything, the price will very slowly increase for new customers as the library matures.

So, bear with me. (Ergh, I seriously hate marketing, can you tell? I just want to build stuff).

As always, it helps with deliverability if you reply (it’s like telling your inbox that I know your secret handshake, or something). I reply to every single one. ✌️

Why not tell me how you use Bites? (It helps me design features / optimise for that behaviour).
